Ahmad Kahn Rahami and his family accused a neighbor of conspiring with the police against them
On April 6, 2011, Ahmad Kahn Rahami and his family filed a civil lawsuit, accusing their neighbor, James Dean McDermott, of conspiring with the police and other city officials in order to harass and intimidate them.
The Rahami’s alleged that their neighbor, police, and city officials harassed them because of their Arab ethnicity and Muslim religion.
In 1995, Ahmad Rahami immigrated from Afghanistan to the United States. Upon arriving in the United States, he joined his father, who had been living in the United States for some time, in Elizabeth, New Jersey.
The Rahami’s own a Fried Chicken Restaurant which is next door to McDermott’s business.
McDermott told the New York Times that the Rahami’s business was open late into the night. McDermott also told the New York Times that the Rahami’s customers would hang out on his property and “urinate on his driveway.”
As a result, McDermott called the police and filed a complaint with the City of Elizabeth.
In response to McDermott’s complaint, the city put in place an ordinance requiring businesses to close at 10PM.
The Rahami’s allegedly violated the new ordinance on several occasions. The Rahami’s alleged violation of the ordinance resulted in the police coming back to the property several times and issuing citations.
During one interaction with the police, one of the Rahami sons got into a fight with a police officer.
The son was charged, but never prosecuted. The prosecution was placed on hold because the son fled to Afghanistan.
The civil lawsuit, which the family filed in 2011, was thrown out in 2012.
Like his brother, Ahmad Kahn Rahami has had run-ins with law enforcement.
He was arrested in 2008 for not paying his parking tickets, and Rahami was arrested again in 2012 for violating a restraining order.
In 2014, he spent three months in jail after a fight with his mother and one of his brothers.
The incident resulted in Rahami’s father telling the FBI that his son was a “terrorist.” The FBI investigated the situation, but didn’t bring any charges against Rahami.
The state’s grand jury also decided not to indict Rahami on the domestic violence charge.
Ahmad Kahn Rahami is a suspect in the New York and New Jersey bombings which left a total of 29 people injured. Rahami allegedly placed the bombs in the two states on Saturday and Sunday.
On Monday, he was arrested in New Jersey after a bartender saw him sleeping in the doorway of his bar.
The bartender called the local police who, once arriving on the scene, recognized Rahami. Rahami shot and wounded the police officer, while another police officer sustained a graze to his head. The police officers are expected to survive.
After the shootout with the police, Rahami was arrested and taken to a local hospital. He is facing several federal and local charges.
